The Costa del Sol isn't one property market — it's several, each with its own architectural character, property types, and furnishing considerations. Where your property sits changes what actually works inside it. Here's what to know before you start furnishing, area by area.
Puerto Banús & Golden Mile
Predominantly high-end apartments and villas, often with a more established, formal architectural style — high ceilings, larger room proportions, and a market that skews toward luxury finishes.
Furnishing consideration: proportion matters enormously here. Larger rooms can swallow furniture that would feel appropriately scaled elsewhere, so it's worth resisting the temptation to under-furnish a large living space. Statement lighting and a considered mix of materials (as covered in our coastal luxury style guide) tend to suit this area's architecture particularly well.
Nueva Andalucía
A mix of established villas and newer apartment developments, many built or renovated in the last decade with clean, contemporary lines.
Furnishing consideration: this is where we most often encounter non-standard dimensions — many newer developments here have distinctive architectural features (angled walls, unusual ceiling heights, built-in nooks) that don't match standard furniture sizing. A custom or made-to-measure approach is frequently the right call rather than the exception.
Estepona
One of the fastest-growing areas for both new-build developments and renovated older properties, with a notably wide range of architectural styles within a relatively small area.
Furnishing consideration: because property types vary so much here, style choice matters more than in more architecturally uniform areas. A warm Mediterranean approach suits the area's older character properties, while newer developments closer to the marina often call for a more modern, minimalist direction.
Sotogrande
Predominantly larger villas and golf-front properties, generally on larger plots with more formal architecture and a strong emphasis on indoor-outdoor living.
Furnishing consideration: outdoor and transitional spaces (covered terraces, poolside areas) are often as important to furnish thoughtfully as interior rooms. Material durability matters even more here, given the amount of time furniture spends exposed to sun and, in some properties, proximity to the golf course's irrigation and humidity.
Benalmádena & Fuengirola
A broader mix of long-term residential apartments and investment/rental properties, generally more moderate in scale than the Marbella-area developments above.
Furnishing consideration: for investment or rental properties specifically, durability and ease of maintenance often matter more than statement design choices — materials that hold up well to tenant turnover and frequent use are usually a better investment than higher-maintenance luxury finishes.
Málaga City
An increasingly popular area for both full-time residents and investment buyers, with a strong mix of renovated historic buildings and newer developments near the city center.
Furnishing consideration: older buildings in the historic center often come with genuinely unconventional dimensions — low ceilings, narrow rooms, or unusual angles — making this one of the areas where a proper measured, custom approach pays off most clearly.
